Approval matrix

Require a signature on the documents that matter — over a value, over a discount, past a credit limit. Steps run in order, a step can need two of a role rather than one, and the person who raised a document cannot approve it.

Approvals that cannot be worked around

The rule is frozen into the request when it is raised, so editing the rule later cannot change an approval in flight, and the document is fingerprinted, so approving at four thousand and posting at forty thousand is caught and the approval voided.

Escalation and delegation

A step that sits too long moves on by itself and tells whoever it lands on. Going away for a week hands your approvals to a colleague for exactly that week.
